RIVER VALLEY MARKET is today's expression of Northampton's historical efforts to create egalitarian work. In 1842, farmers, abolitionists, and manufacturers experimented with growing and manufacturing silk as a way to accomplish this. Today, many workers at River Valley Market are owner/members, as are shoppers and farmers.
Thank you to Thomas Bradbury for permission to photograph the Coop when there were no customers there, and to each person who was working the night and early morning of May 2. It was inspiring to experience the good cheer, belief in the Coop, and hard work I saw. It was fun to be there. I hope these photos do you justice and let others glimpse the unseen work that makes River Valley Market such a great place to shop.
